Independent Living Designed for Adults
If there’s one generalization that can be applied to our Sunrise independent living communities, it is that our residents are people who have, more than any other generation before them, been citizens of the world. With all the talk of globalization today, it’s easy to forget that this generation came to maturity in the midst of global conflict. They have traveled more than any previous generation. They are more aware of events happening in other parts of the world, thanks to radio, television, and the Internet. And courtesy of the GI Bill, they are better educated. Activities That Engage the Mind and Spirit The activities programs we offer at our independent living communities reflect this level of awareness and sophistication. We make full use of the cultural opportunities that are available in the cities near our communities, organizing evenings at the theater, at concerts, and at the opera. Because our communities have their own transportation, our residents can take day trips, visiting museums, historical sites, and natural areas, without the hassle of having to do the driving themselves. The activities within the communities are similarly substantial. They may include lecture series, chat groups devoted to the topics of the day, and music programs. Let the Festivities Begin! But this is also a generation with a demonstrated capacity for fun. After all, it invented both swing and the jitterbug. Accordingly, our independent living communities host a variety of social events, from happy hours to dinner dances to summer barbecues. These social events serve to highlight another benefit of all the activities that are available at our independent living communities. Our residents are still interested in building connections, with each other as well as the outside world. Seen in this light, our activities programs provide residents with an occasion to get together with people who are their peers and counterparts, to learn about their experiences and exchange ideas, and to build friendships.
